RENDERINGS REVEALED

Hello, Comrade: Cubix Planned Across Street From Lenin Statue

Fremont fancies itself the Center of the Universe. Given it's location, the upcoming mixed-user Cubix might end up as the Center of the Center of the Universe. Planned for 3519 Fremont Place N, the residential/retail complex will be across from the Lenin Statue on one side, the Fremont Rocket on the other side and just around the corner from the Center of the Universe guidepost. Plus, it's prime viewing location for the Solstice Parade, at least for half of the 45 planned units. The six-story building will also include 2,750 sf of retail space on the ground floor. If it can somehow not become a coffee shop or Thai restaurant, it'll be a minor miracle. Jackson Main Architecture and developer Daniel Stoner take their designs before the design review board on May 4 for early guidance. The 1916 building on the site now, which was built as a factory and is now apartments, will be torn down.

Examining Nepal's Architectural Legacy After the Earthquake

As images of flattened buildings bounce across the Internet, the scale of the humanitarian tragedy left in the wake of the recent Nepal earthquake has begun to take hold. And while the loss of life, and efforts to aid survivors, are paramount, another loss has also begun to reverberate. Nepal's unique position, perched on the roof of the world and at the crossroads of great civilizations, has left the country with an unrivaled and singular architectural heritage with seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites spread out across the Kathmandu Valley, many of which were severely damaged in the quake. "It's just aesthetically stunning," says David Gellner, Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford. "It's like going to Rome, history is built into every street corner. This kind of Hindu-Buddhist urban landscape was once much more pervasive. It stretched from Afghanistan to Bali, and now the Kathmandu Valley is where it is. It's like going back in a time machine to see what northern India was like in the first century AD."

Seattle's Architectural History Comes Back to The Box

Ask someone to describe THE architectural style that defines Seattle and you'll probably get a dozen answers. Maybe more. Victorian, Tudor, Craftsman, Dutch Colonial, Mid-century, Northwest Contemporary, Modern...you could find enough examples of all of them. As the Curbed Network takes a look at architectural styles that define their specific city and region, we thought we might zero in on a style so specific that it's literally got Seattle in the name: The Seattle Box. It's not the prettiest but, dammit, it's ours.

Another Day, Another Paul Kirk Home on the Market

Did everyone who owns a Paul H. Kirk home suddenly decide to flood the market? We saw one in Hawthorne Hills three weeks back followed by another last week and now we've got this 3-BR in Bryant that's available for $775K. Built by Kirk in 1947, it's got mid-century modern bones but some unique features that separate it from the usual. Specifically, the oval-shaped window wall in the great room, which combines with tall ceilings and warm wood touches that really give it some grandeur. Bidet alert in one bathroom and a jet tub in another. Lots of love has gone into the landscaping out back as well. Consider this one of the best Kirk's on the market...until the next one comes along.

When it Comes to Well-Being, Seattle's Doing Pretty Well

Via CityLab, we recently got a look at the Social Science Research Council's Measure of America project, which attempts to measure the "well-being" of Americans in different parts of the country. Measuring things such as life expectancy and standard of living, it's a way to find the places in America where, in theory, economic and social progress is happening (and not happening). So...how does Seattle measure up?
a040a8441.png
The first map shows the pattern for life expectancy, which comes in at 79 years nationwide. Good news for Seattleites, you're expected to live longer than that. We're in the 81.1 - 83.9 range, the best of them all. See, all that kale is paying off. Even elsewhere in Washington, there's no area worse off than the national average.

Early Sketches For Potential Tukwila Arena Revealed

Chris Hansen and Seattle Mayor Ed Murray received a swift kick in the pants earlier this week when it became public knowledge that a group wants to build an arena in Tukwila and bring an NHL franchise to the region. Tuesday we learned that Tukwila Mayor Jim Haggerton has been working with the investors for months, personally contacting both the NBA and NHL on their behalf to pitch the potential stadium site. Part of that communication is documents that include rough sketches of the arena by Mulvanny-G2 Architecture as well as parking structures and a hotel. The NHL's Board of Governors meet in June so we'll probably know more about the potential for both Tukwila and Seattle's arena plans.

February Seattle Home Prices Were Up, Which You Already Knew

Screen%20Shot%202015-04-28%20at%2011.12.16%20AM.png
The S&P/Case-Shiller 20-city index for February 2015 is out and the average price of existing single-family homes in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties was up 1.4 percent from January. That's double the percentage in the previous month and the Seattle-area has now posted a 7.1 percent average gain over the last year. While it's no San Francisco (3.3 percent MOM gain), Seattle's numbers are higher than the 20-city index average (0.9 percent). As Seattle Bubble notes, only San Francisco and Denver saw bigger home prices increases between January and February. So long as inventory stays where it's at, don't expect to see much change with this trend.

On the heels of debuting a redecorated family dining room at the White House, Michelle Obama has unveiled the brand new Obama state china service, which will be deployed for the first time at the Japan State Dinner tomorrow night. The 11-piece place setting, which Apartment Therapy got to preview last week, consists of white china adorned with bands of a white relief pattern featuring pinwheels and palm fronds, matte gold, and a bright "Kailua blue" inspired by the waters seen in President Obama's home state of Hawaii.
